Knole House

Knole House is a grade 1 listed English Country house situated in Sevenoaks, Kent.




  • Construction began in the 15th century with later additions in the 16th century.
  • It was said to have been constructed as a calendar house (365 rooms, 52 staircases, 12 entrances and 7 courtyards).
  • It ranks in the top 5 of England’s largest houses.
  • It has been used for filming for several movies (The Other Boleyn Girl, Sherlock Holmes, Pirates of the Caribbean)


J E Putney & Sons were awarded the contract to carry out the restoration of the external façade of the great staircase. New Oak Riven Laths were fixed and 3 coat haired non-hydraulic lime was applied. Ashlar lines were formed to match the existing. Extensive renovations internally were carried out also, including renewing several ceilings, running new in situ cornice along with extensive making good works.
